The Zephyr Education Foundation
The Zephyr Education Foundation is a non-profit Ocean Science and Technology education program based in Woods Hole, MA. We host school field trips in Woods Hole in which we go on a hands-on scientific cruise in Vineyard Sound replicating the cruises performed by the laboratories here. Students participate in deploying and recovering marine biological and oceanographic instrumentation. Trips include a live underwater video feed from our towed video camera, dredging marine specimens, deploying an acoustically releasable mooring, towing plankton nets and other shipboard activities. We also tour some the the laboratories and docks in Woods Hole and discuss the research projects currently under investigation here.

Latest news:
Our April Vacation Week program out of New Bedford was a terrific success. Thanks to our grant from the National Grid Foundation, we took five groups of kids to experience marine biology and oceanographic studies. And thanks to our fantastic side scan sonar donation from EdgeTech (W. Wareham, MA) we were able to find the wreck of the Rehoboth. (below)

We just moved into new offices at 97 Water Street, Woods Hole! It is about 500 feet past the drawbridge on the right. This is where classes should meet us to start their day.

Drifter Project:
This spring classes deployed drifting
buoys provided by Jim Manning of
NOAA. They were deployed in Vine-
yard Sound between Martha's
Vineyard and Nobska Point. We
have been following their tracks,
all different throughout southern New England waters.

Through collaboration with research institutions in Woods Hole,
including the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, we engage
the class in the techniques, results and relevance of current
research projects.

The Zephyr Education Foundation believes that while some students may

become professional scientists, all will become voters whether they are

teachers, school administrators, governmental officials or pursue other areas

of interest. All can benefit from a hands-on program that illustrates the

diversity, excitement and importance of the marine environment.
